[09/05/2025]: Why You Should Boycott Nintendo

Many people are upset with Nintendo right now and calling for a boycott, and despite having been a Nintendo fanboy in the past, I also take this stance and will explain why you should as well.

After the announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2, many Nintendo fans have been complaining about the price of the system (that being 450 American dollars) with that price still being confusing, as Nintendo hasn't been clear as to if it's factoring tariffs in. I don't live in the US, but $450 is the equivalent of £339, which is still a high price. That's also for the console by itself, each game has pricing decided on what Nintendo believes the game is worth. For example, the latest Mario Kart will cost $80, a ridiculous price for any game, but, even more ludicrous than that, the Nintendo Switch 2 version of The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild with the DLCs will be $90. The "physical" copies of many Switch 2 games also aren't physical, but codes in boxes, so you'll be paying close to $100 for a code. Heck, they're even selling the tutorial on how to use the damn thing outside of the console itself.

Nintendo is going to ruin the videogame industry, somehow making it more rampant with greed than it already is. Nintendo is currently testing our limits, how much we are willing to pay for their products, and if they find out that we are paying baffling prices for games than other companies will also begin charging higher because they know they'll be successful. I assure you that if the Nintendo Switch 2 is successful than Sony will do the same ranged prices per game and maybe even Microsoft. Prices will be that out of hand, the average person won't be able to play video games.

Even if you're rich and care little about the average gamer who can't afford such prices, how is the Switch 2 that exciting? Sure, the games look amazing, but as a console what is so special about it? Nintendo used to innovate. Each gimmick for their consoles were ground breaking. The DS's double screen, the Wii's motion controls, each Mario game had it's own identity, but now they aren't as daring. The Switch 2 doesn't have much which seems new, at least to me. It's graphics are better, but Sony have had better visuals than Nintendo for years. How is the chat function unique? Steam has a chat function and has for years! The Nintendo Switch 2 is just a slightly better Switch, but with a blown-out price. The Switch 2 just reminds me of the New 3DS XL. Larger screen, some extra features which make bigger games play, etc, but that was marketed as what it was.

The only other reason to buy a Switch 2 is due to loyalty to Nintendo, and in some ways I can understand being loyal to them as a brand, Zelda is one of my favourite franchises ever, but companies do NOT care about you. You cannot afford to be loyal to a company, make decisions on the price and value of something rather than whether or not you've bought from the seller before.

If you're loyal to Nintendo, as a company, then you should know how they act towards other developers and independent creators. They have a history of copyright claiming footage of their games being played and removing emulators for games they made decades ago and don't care about. Recently, they're suing an up-coming game called Pal World, which is made by a developer much smaller than them. Pal World, known as "Pokemon with guns", is inspired by Pokemon and other monster tamers whilst putting it's own spin on the genre. I've actually seen people say they prefer it over Pokemon. Nintendo, clearly feeling threatened by a smaller studio making something which could surpass Pokemon, decided to have a lawsuit over it. Pokemon didn't create the monster-taming genre, for example the Megami Tensei games were around before.

Nintendo is a greedy company who's threatening the accessibility of video games, and if the Switch 2 is successful then gaming will become something only for the rich. Boycott Nintendo, there's better games being made by small creators on Steam which are also cheaper, not factoring Steam often having sales.
